Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington, who led his band from 1923 until his death in 1974, called his music “American Music” rather than jazz, and he liked to describe those who impressed him as “beyond category.” These included many of the musicians who were members of his orchestra, some of whom are considered among the best in jazz in their own right, but it was Ellington who melded them into one of the best-known jazz orchestral units in the history of jazz. Come celebrate Mr. Ellington’s birthday and enjoy trombonist Charles Funn’s Dunbar Alumni Jazz Ensemble.Charles Funn, Trombone~Funn began his career as a music educator after graduating from Morgan State University in 1975. Active as a performer, he has played with the Temptations, Aretha Franklin, Hank Jones and Billy Eckstine and is a member of Gene Walker’s Big Band. He is the conductor of the award-winning Dunbar High School Jazz Band.
Dunbar Alumni Jazz Ensemble~features a number of former award winning Dunbar Jazz Ensemble participants. Many of the members of the band are now professional musicians in their own right. Inspired by Funn and with the opportunity to continue playing the music they had come to love, they now join him in this exceptional ensemble with a focus on the music of Duke Ellington using original Ellington Band scores.

The Craig Gildner Trio evokes the sounds of small groups during the swing era when musicians assembled after gigs, cocktail or penthouse parties for impromptu jams. The Great American Songbook and Tin Pan Alley provide the repertoire for this hot little group comprised of Craig Gildner, piano and vocals, Halley Shoenberg, clarinet and alto sax, and Greg Williams, drums. There are no set arrangements, and no song is played the same way twice, but every tune has a melody, and will make it impossible to keep your feet still.

WIN Rally
On December 5, 2011 the Wesley congregation participated in the WIN Rally (Washington Interfaith Network) We had a total of 40 with the MUCC. Wesley had a total of 5 participants. We thank all who participated and those who wanted to.
The WIN's goal will now more reflectively try to accomplish more goals in obtaining more affordable housing, and invest more in the community for more assesable job employment.
It is our hope that the community of Wesely will have more participation for the WIN organization as we go farther along in our closer interaction with our community.

What People Say About Wesley:
Diversity in DC Churches:
Some may have read the recent article by Annie Gowen (Washington Post) about Calvary Baptist Church. Calvary Baptist Church has been proactive in "melding cultures in a diverse era". This church should be commended for the steps it is taking to spiritually bridge together communities, in a city which is still noted for its socio-economic segregation. New families, people young and old, often have to search for a church that they can call their spiritual home. Diversity in a church is not a nice to have but a true need to have. Tomorrow's world will be a manifestation of the internet world; diverse, multi-lingual and integrated, whether we choose to embrace that impending reality or not. In our own Chevy Chase community, Wesley United Methodist Church, should also be noted as a truly international and multicultural church. Radical hospitality is the norm, and people respect and celebrate each others similarities and differences. There is real sense of community self. Wesley has had some services in English and Spanish and is reintroducing a bilingual Sunday school program. The church has a multi-award winning Afro-Latino ministry. And the food is always international potluck style! Wesley recently held its 181st Easter Sunday service this week. It was a beautiful service. The church is not perfect, but it seeks to learn more and do better. Wesley UMC would love to welcome you on Sunday at 11am.
